San Diego Craft Beer Japan（SDCBJ）について
San Diego Craft Beer Japanは、アメリカ・サンディエゴで出会ったクラフトビール、特にIPAの魅力を、日本でももっと気軽に楽しめるようにしたいという想いから生まれたプロジェクトです。

かつてサンディエゴで数年間仕事をしていたときに、初めて本格的なIPAと出会い、そのおいしさにドハマりしました。いまでこそ、日本でもおいしいクラフトビールをたくさん飲めるようになりましたが、当時は、日本ではまだサンディエゴ産のクラフトビールに出会える機会は多くはありませんでした。

そんな話しを、とある方にしていたところ、「つまり、山本さんはクラフトビールの聖地に行かれてたわけですね」と言われました。

「え？そうなんですか？」と、サンディエゴがクラフトビールの聖地と言われていることなんて全く知らなかったぼくは、さっそく調べてみました。すると、たしかに、世界では以下のような地域がクラフトビール界隈では有名だと言われていることを知りました（諸説あり）。

1. サンディエゴ（アメリカ・カリフォルニア）

2. ポートランド（アメリカ・オレゴン）

3. デンバー（アメリカ・コロラド）

4. ブリュッセル（ベルギー）

5. メルボルン（オーストラリア）　など

その中でも特にサンディエゴは、West Coast IPAの発祥の地、世界有数のブルワリー密集地（100以上）、どちらかというと伝統よりも「進化と実験の象徴」、などの観点で、他の地域とは一線を画しているとのことでした。

そのようなことを知るにつけ、サンディエゴのクラフトビールはもちろん、少しでも現地の「空気」みたいなものも一緒に日本にお届けできないかと思い、この取り組みを始めました。なので、ビールをご注文くださった方には、ブルワリーさんの紹介冊子や名刺、サンディエゴのポストカードやビールグラスなんかも、少しずつお届けしていけたらなと思っています。ビールと合うメニューの紹介や、現地のハンバーガーもあればなぁ・・・

ちなみに、商品ページを見ていただければわかる通り、サンディエゴのクラフトビール、結構なお値段します。人によっては、突き抜けておいしい感じもしないかもしれないですし、いくら「聖地」だと言われても、毎晩気兼ねなく飲めるビール、と比べてしまうと、ぼくも正直、なかなかオススメできません（ぼくも金麦好きですしネ）。そういうビールをお探しの場合は、ここではなく、ご近所のスーパーやドラッグストア、量販店さんに行っていただく方がいいです！

ただ、もし、「友人がサンディエゴに旅行に行って、ビールとポストカードをお土産で買ってきてくれた感じ」や、「普段と違う、ちょっと特別な日のアクセント」「あの人へのオススメや、贈り物のひとつとして」、はたまた、「自分もサンディエゴのあの空気感が好き」という方がもしいらっしゃいましたら、月に一度くらいのペースでも、当サイトをながめていっていただけるとうれしいです。

あくまで、お届けしたいのはビールだけじゃなく、サンディエゴの空気です。難しいのは百も承知で、どこまでできるか、それがぼくの挑戦です。

そうはいっても、やっぱりビールにもこだわりたいので（笑）、
(1) 最初は、日本の他店さんでも買えるビールから始めますが、

(2) まだ日本には入ってきていないビールの販売や

(3) 現地のホームブリューイング（＝自家醸造）用のレシピを日本で再現して販売

なんかにも広げていきたいと思っています。（協業くださるインポーターさんやOEMメーカーさん探さないと！）

About San Diego Craft Beer Japan (SDCBJ)

San Diego Craft Beer Japan is a project born from a simple wish:

to make the incredible craft beers I encountered in San Diego - especially IPAs - more casually accessible here in Japan.

Back when I worked in San Diego for a few years, I had my first real encounter with an authentic IPA. The intense bitterness and aromatic hops hit me like a wave - I was hooked. Nowadays, Japan has plenty of great craft beers too, but at the time, it was quite rare to come across San Diego-made IPAs.

I once shared that story with my colleague, and he said: "So basically, you were working in the holy land of craft beer."

I had never even heard San Diego described that way before, so I looked it up. Sure enough, multiple sources around the world consider these regions to be the epicenters of craft beer culture (with some debate, of course):

1. San Diego, California (USA)

2. Portland, Oregon (USA)

3. Denver, Colorado (USA)

4. Brussels (Belgium)

5. Melbourne (Australia) - and others.

Among them, San Diego stands out - not only as the birthplace of West Coast IPA, but also as one of the world's most densely populated craft beer regions (100+ breweries!). Rather than tradition, it's known as a hub of innovation and experimentation.

The more I learned, the more I wanted to share not just the beer, but a taste of that whole atmosphere with people in Japan. That's how this project got started. So when you order a beer from us, I hope to include a few extras - like mini brewery booklets, postcards from San Diego, or even custom beer glasses. And maybe someday: food pairings, or even a burger inspired by what you'd find over there...

Now, if you've seen our product pages, you'll notice something: These San Diego craft beers aren't cheap. And honestly, some might feel they're not all that special, and that's totally fair. Even with all the “craft beer capital” hype, I won't pretend they're everyday, easygoing beers. If you're looking for daily drinkers, your local supermarket or liquor store is a better bet - seriously!

What I really want to share isn't just beer - it's a breeze of San Diego. I know it's a bit of a stretch, but that's the challenge I'm excited to take on.

Of course, I want to make sure the beer itself is worth it, too. So I'm starting with (1) what's already available in Japan, but eventually, I want to Introduce (2) beers that haven't made it to Japan yet (with help from importers), and (3) collaborate with local breweries here to recreate San Diego-style beers using original homebrew recipes (with help from contract brewers).

The photo above was taken from Torrey Pines, looking out toward Japan. Back then, I was exhausted from working on the negotiation with Japan team from US side. Staring across the Pacific, I remember thinking: “OKY” (Short for Omae ga Kite Yatte miro - basically: "You try doing this!" A phrase many overseas assignees quietly mutter to themselves. Look it up - you'll find lots of stories.)
